Meet Our Makers - Phil Sproson Photography

Phil Sproson Photography

Phil Sproson is a professional photographer based in the heart of the Peak District; whose passion for the place he lives is a clear inspiration in all of his work.

In this edition of the ‘Meet Our Makers’ series I’m delighted to be talking to Phil Sproson (Phil Sproson Photography); who has lived and worked in the Peak District for many years. Phil loves to use the outdoor world as his studio, making the most of the many natural backdrops at his disposal.

Hi Phil, it’s wonderful to talk to you today. I’m fascinated to know, when did you first take an interest in photography?

Around 2010, I attended my inaugural photography workshop, and that pivotal moment ignited the spark that turned photography into an essential part of my life. Unlike many enthusiasts who reminisce about their early days with a film camera or nostalgic hours spent in a darkroom, my journey has always been intertwined with digital photography. This modern medium has shaped my unique artistic perspective and allowed me to embrace the wonders of this creative realm.

So at what stage did you become inspired to start a business?

While working at AstraZeneca, I discovered a hidden passion for photography, which not only allowed me to immerse myself in the great outdoors but also provided a sense of purpose and a much-needed escape from everyday stress. As I wandered through picturesque landscapes, it was just me, my trusty camera, and the breathtaking scenes surrounding me. Eager to hone my skills, I participated in a few photography workshops, which only served to deepen my love for the art. In 2014, I took a leap of faith and founded 'Phil Sproson Photography,' embarking on a new journey filled with paid gigs, primarily capturing the charm of holiday cottages. This marked the humble beginnings of my entrepreneurial adventure. Two years later, I bid farewell to AstraZeneca, and wholeheartedly embraced the exhilarating world of full-time self-employment.

As a full-time photographer and business owner, I have immersed myself in the diverse photographic world. My work encompasses not only the sale of products adorned with my images, but also collaborations with retailers to share the end results. With a well-earned reputation as a seasoned holiday cottage photographer, in the earlier days I built my portfolio working with 'Peak Cottages,' capturing the charm of over 200 enchanting Peak District cottages. My independent ventures have added even more delightful abodes to that collection.

I pride myself on the wider scope of being a destination photographer, specialising in capturing the alluring essence of the Peak District. This pursuit has led to prestigious commissions from 'Visit Peak District,' the Official Tourist Board, the Peak District National Park Authority, and various local and district councils. My work has also graced the pages of renowned national magazines such as BBC Countryfile Magazine, Country Walking Magazine, and Trail Magazine, and has been sought after by esteemed companies like Ramblers Holidays, Patagonia, Alpkit, and a host of bicycle brands. Through my lens, I strive to showcase the region's breathtaking beauty and inspire others to explore its wonders.

Moreover, I am proud to be the co-founder of Let's Go Peak District, the leading independent destination website and social media hub for the mesmerising Peak District area. Alongside my talented partner, Suzanne, affectionately known as 'Peaklass,' and the dynamic duo of Jim and Jo, famously recognised as 'Villager Jim' and his lovely wife Jo, we share a common goal. Through Let's Go, we strive to showcase the captivating allure of the Peak District and its surroundings on a daily basis, inspiring countless individuals to explore the wonders this breathtaking region has to offer.

“A treasure trove of images that embody the spirit of the region”. Phil Sproson Photography.

So what is a typical day of photography like for you?

As a photographer, I embrace an opportunistic approach. Residing in the picturesque Hope Valley, I have the advantage of swiftly being able to reach vantage points when the conditions are just right. Alternatively, Suzanne and I often embark on early morning adventures, eagerly exploring the landscape for new gems to capture. Over the course of 3 or 4 hours, we journey through the area, drawn to locations that we believe will yield stunning photographs based on the day's conditions. Our explorations not only fuel our passion but also create a treasure trove of images that embody the spirit of the region.

What has been your proudest moment in your business so far?

A few remarkable achievements come to mind, such as gracing the front cover of Countryfile Magazine, a relationship that has flourished since 2014 as they've become a lucky charm accompanying my entrepreneurial journey, as year on year I contribute to the magazine. Other memorable commissions include capturing a Patagonia product launch and documenting the inaugural UK press trip for AllTrails in the Peak District. These opportunities have been exhilarating milestones.

Co-founding and nurturing Let's Go Peak District, alongside our dedicated team, has been a tremendous accomplishment, transforming it into the area's top resource. There's much to take pride in, from the plethora of products available in shops to my personal creations. I continually strive for exceptional quality in every aspect of my work, ensuring each piece is a testament to my passion and commitment to the craft.

Do you have a favourite place to photograph or perhaps a favourite shot you’ve taken?

Carhead Rocks holds a special place in my heart, as it harmoniously aligns with the serene Hope Valley, offering a peaceful haven away from the bustling popularity of its neighbours, Stanage and Higger Tor. One of my most cherished captures is the visually arresting 'Fingers of God' shot taken from Millstone Edge. This evocative image features vivid purple heather, a brooding sky, and potent beams of light that pierce through the clouds, illuminating the Hope Valley below.

“I am pushing ahead with map based products in 2023”. Phil Sproson Photography.

What can our customers look forward to seeing in 2023? Do you have any new products in the pipeline or anything that will only be available at markets?

I am pushing ahead with map based products in 2023, so I am using modern maps on jigsaws, tea towels and cushions, and historic maps on greeting cards. This departure from the photographic is to broaden my available market to other areas of the country. I am creating map products for all of the UK National Parks.

The 2024 Peak District Calendar will be available and a one-off 2024 Buxton Calendar will also be available too.
